Abarcas or Menorquinas, its origin, logically, is from the wonderful island of Menorca. It is a 100% Menorquin product that has gone from being a local shoe, to become an international sandal.
It seems that the first to use this type of footwear were the slingers of the Balearic Islands, which was found in the service of the Carthaginian General Hannibal, in his fight against the Romans around 200 BC.
Later on, and due to their strength and flexibility, they were used by the peasants of the area, who saw in this type of footwear an ideal way to protect their feet during the long days of hard work in the field.
Since then, its primitive appearance and the initial use of Menorcan spangles has been changing.
Initially they were entirely made of leather, and sewn by hand with waxed thread. However, on this island, the land is heavily covered with stones, which is the reason the workers of the field needed a resistant, flexible footwear that would protect their feet in their long days in the field. It occurred to someone to reinforce the sole of the menorquinas with the rubber of old wheels from cars. From the 60s its use was popularized. Now the sandals would last longer, the foot would be more protected from moisture and the abrupt terrain, introducing in addition the non-slip factor and flexibility of this material.
The enormous demand for this type of footwear, also made it necessary to put at the service of its manufacture the new technological advances. However, the artisanal factor continues to occupy an important place in the production chain of the same.
With the sole of a car wheel, or not, but always with the sole, the instep and the heel strip in leather, and sewn with waxed thread, the menorquinas have been evolving throughout history, to meet the needs of the circumstances, but without losing the essence and flavor of tradition that characterizes them.
At present, menorquinas, in addition to being a comfortable, flexible, breathable and natural footwear, are also a true reflection of fashion trends, in terms of colors and designs.
There are models for all tastes: Flat or wedge floors; smooth uppers, openwork, with prints or pyro-prints; simple fastenings, with buckles or Velcro, for the children of the house; traditional and others more cheerful colors.
Do not doubt, the menorquinas are always a good choice to be cool, comfortable and fashionable this summer, because it also combines with all kinds of looks, from the most classic to the most casual.
